Dominican Republic

My trip to Dominican was one of the most relaxing trips I’ve ever been on. I went down for 2 weeks to visit my Mom who was escaping the majority of our Canadian winter. Although I spend a lot of time taking photos and doing work I feel like I spent an equal amount of time just relaxing and spending quality time with my mom and it was so amazing.  I’ve never felt so relaxed in my life to be honest. It probably had more to do with the fact that I was surrounded by retired people than the country itself but I’m not complaining 🙂 I’ve now been to the Puerto Plata area twice now and I’ve found some really great spots that I want to share with you guys so keep reading if you are interested or heading to the Dominican!

Cabarete Beach- World famous for its kite surfing. You will be amazed by the hundreds of kites in the air on any given day as well as some wind surfers dodging their way around them. This beach is also lined with restaurants, bars and little boutiques, that are open day and night! We found this great Salsa dancing spot, and danced the night away.

Hideaway Beach- This is one of the most magical beaches I’ve ever seen! Mostly deserted except for a few small resorts and surf schools. It is the perfect spot if you are just looking to get away from the crowds, it feels like you are on a deserted island! Definitely a must if you are looking to get some awesome photos

Natura Cabana – If you’re looking for a beautiful eco villa, spa and yoga retreat this place is beautiful and located on Hideaway beach! The cabins are all different, unique with rustic charm. A tranquil oasis.

Arsenio’s at Hideaway –This tiny little outdoor restaurant is located on beautiful hideaway beach and serves the most delicious Dominican whole fried fish! I revisit it every time after my surf lessons and happy hour starts at 5pm 😉

Gansevoort Playa Imbert We were staying in a condo next door to the Gansevoort but decided to spend the day here on a day pass for only 50$ US per person which you can use towards your food and drinks. We were greeted with fresh coconuts and quickly realized that most of the staff was Greek so naturally my mom was speaking to them in greek all day and we quickly bonded. The service was excellent and the food was delicious and large portions, we did not go hungry!  I would highly recommend this resort.

Papis – La Casita de Papi is a well known shrimp and lobster restaurant right on the beach in Cabarete. It’s honestly a must try! We ordered the Shrimp “a la papi” which is to die for and their best seller. The presentation is just as beautiful as the fresh tasting shrimps, my mouth is watering just thinking about it!

Horse Back Riding – If you love horse back riding or just want to try it then Sea Horse Ranch is the place to go. They have well tended beautiful horses, amazing instruction and super reasonable prices! Galloping on the beach is an amazing magical experience!
